Considering all of the myriad moving parts that make up your vehicle, it should come as no surprise that oil changes are at the top of your list when it comes to regularly scheduled maintenance! Oil works to coat, protect, cool, and lubricate your engine’s many parts, so having clean oil is positively essential.
At our Fairfax area Honda dealership, we urge all of our customers to take proper care of their vehicles. For some, this means the occasional trip to our service center; for others, this means spending a bit of time under the hood. If you’re the do-it-yourself type, be sure to check out our tutorial on how to change your own oil and filter!
If you need to raise your vehicle to work under it, be sure to take proper precautions. Jack up your car using manufacturer suggested placement of the jack; use horses to ensure your vehicle stays supported; only ever raise your vehicle on a level surface.
Before draining your oil, open the oil cap under the hood; this will allow for easier draining. Then, use an appropriately sized socket wrench to loosen the drain plug from the oil plan. Be sure to place an appropriate receptacle to catch the oil, and save it to be delivered to a recycling center later. Replace the drain plug when the oil has finished draining.
Next, locate your oil filter and remove it by hand. Again, be sure to place a container to catch any old oil that drains out. Check that the old filter still has the gasket attached; leaving the old gasket in place on the engine can cause issues.
Apply a thin coat of clean oil to the new filter, then hand tighten it in place; be sure note to over tighten it. Clean oil is essential to your vehicle’s performance, so the experts at our Honda service center near Fairfax recommend changing your filter each time you change your oil.
Once your oil has been drained and your new filter is installed, it’s time to add new oil. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for what weight oil to add. You can typically find this information under the hood or in your owner’s manual.
Add a bit less than what’s recommended, then close the cab and start your car for a minute or so. After it runs, check the dipstick and top off the oil appropriately. Then it’s time to enjoy your smooth ride!

It’s been a while since driver’s ed class, and winter is the perfect time to review some of the key info that might have gone in one ear and out the other. Particularly in a state like Virginia where winter weather can be unexpected, it’s essential to take the time to prepare.
At Pohanka Nissan of Fredericksburg, we know it’s a coin toss whether we’ll have a mild winter or another polar vortex. When it comes to safety on the road, though, it’s never worth it to leave things to chance. Follow some quick tips to make sure you’re ready for whatever wind blows your way!
If you’re accustomed to clear skies and dry roads, you may not spend too much time thinking about traction. Drivers who don’t have a taste for off-roading might not even know what sort of drive system their vehicle has.
Familiarizing yourself with your vehicle, and more specifically the drive train, is essential. Depending on whether your vehicle has front-wheel, rear-wheel, or all-wheel drive, your reaction to a skid will be different. Take the time to learn which wheels power your vehicle and how to respond to a loss of control on icy roads appropriately. Making the right reaction second nature could be the difference between a close call and an accident.
Head to the store and pick up the essentials before you need them. Not only is it best practice to be prepared, but you’ll also beat the rush at the grocery store that’s sure to flood in when the forecast calls for snow.
When you make your shopping list, be sure to include the essentials for your trunk or back seat: warm clothing, water, and food for your comfort in an emergency, and a shovel, salt, and sand or kitty litter to help you get yourself out of a sticky situation.
If you take the time to prepare your mind and your gear for winter weather before it arrives in earnest, you’re assured to have an easier time making the best of frosty roads. For more advice on how you can beat the winter weather, or to make a service appointment to ensure your car is in top shape for the coming months, be sure to contact Pohanka Nissan of Fredericksburg online or to call our friendly team at (540) 898-5200 today!
