If you were to take a survey regarding dangerous driving situations, most motorists would likely point out the dangers of driving while drunk or under the influence. Others might mention distracted driving, particularly the recklessness of using the phone or texting while on the road.
What many motorists might not think to mention, though, is the risk associated with driving while drowsy. At our Maryland VW dealer, though, we’ve got the facts about sleepy driving.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), sleepiness behind the wheel is the primary cause of nearly 100,000 reported accidents annually. Their numbers show that those accidents result in upwards of 1,500 deaths and 71,000 injuries per year.
While many drivers fail to see the risk involved, the numbers clearly showcase the gravity of the situation. In many states, driving while sleep-deprived is legally defined as reckless driving behavior.
In our showroom, you’ll find that many new VW models bring Maryland drivers advanced features geared toward improving alertness. With innovative available systems like Adaptive Cruise Control, Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking, the Side Assist Lane Change Assistant, and Lane Assist Lane Departure Warning, the Volkswagen lineup is doing more than ever to help keep drivers aware of their surroundings.
Even so, motorists carry the paramount responsibility when it comes to their own safety and the safety of others on the road. Driving without enough sleep lowers reaction time, decreases alertness, impairs judgment, and can even make you more aggressive.
If you find yourself nodding off or stifling yawns on the road, the safest decision is to pull off the road, get some rest, and continue when you’re refreshed. It’s never worth the risk to carry on when conditions are unsafe. To learn more about safe driving habits, be sure to contact us online or to call the Pohanka Volkswagen team at (301) 808-7100 today!

Family life is synonymous with a hectic schedule. Between your daily commute, errands, school, the kids’ after-school activities, and family fun on the weekends, it can feel like you’re always on your way from one stop to the next.
The right vehicle can be the perfect addition to your family dynamic. At our Honda dealer in VA, the all-new 2016 Pilot is just the ticket when it comes to making the most out of every mile while tackling your family’s endless to-do list.
With a world of space in the cabin, there’s enough room for everyone from kids to adults to stretch out while bringing along all of the extras you depend on. Even better, an exciting powertrain adds fun for drivers to enjoy without sacrificing efficiency.
With three rows of seating, the 2016 Honda Pilot lets VA families settle in for the road ahead. Seating in EX-L models and above even features a one-touch solution to adjusting the space, sliding the second row forward to add space in the rear with virtually no effort at all.
The seats also offer splits for folding, allowing you to find the perfect combination of passenger and cargo space for the trip without sacrificing either one unnecessarily.
Function isn’t the only feature of the cabin, though. A plethora or available features, like heated captain’s chairs in the first two rows, leather upholstery, and a DVD/Blu-ray disc entertainment system, make it easy to turn your 2016 Pilot into a mobile living room that the whole family will love.
Drivers will enjoy the ride, too, thanks to this SUV’s brilliant powertrain. A V6 engine mated to a nine-speed transmission delivers on both power and efficiency, offering up to 280 horsepower with EPA estimates as high as 27 mpg on the highway.*
If you’ve been eager to see the whole family smiling when you pull out of the driveway, then the all-new 2016 Pilot is the way to go. No two road trips are quite alike, but every voyage should be based around smart packing. Whether you’re flying solo for the weekend or taking the whole family out on a month-long expedition, it’s important to use your head when getting ready to roll.
At our DC area Chevy dealership, we’ve spent plenty of time soaking in the sights from behind the wheel. Here are some of our top tips to help you get ready for the road ahead.
Start off with the essentials. Factor in the length of your trip and the climate when planning out clothing for your trip. It’s important to be prepared, but try to avoid over-packing; as long as you’re not out in the woods, you can always find time to stop at a laundromat if you need to.
Next, make a list of all the things that you can’t pack until the last minute. Many items, like toiletries, gadgets, and chargers, will likely be getting used up until you leave. A list will help to make sure that nothing is forgotten.
If you’re traveling with kids of any age, don’t forget to bring some age-appropriate games or entertainment to pass the miles. And even if your travelers are all adults, the team at our Chevy dealer serving DC recommends bringing along some baby wipes; they always come in handy for sticky messes along the way!
Whether you’re loading outdoor gear into the all-new 2015 Colorado or packing luggage into the best-in-class cargo space of the 2016 Traverse, it’s important to do it the right way.
Start with the heaviest items, and load them in the center of the cargo area as far forward as possible. This will ensure proper balance and weight distribution. Even in an interior cargo space or trunk, we recommend using straps or bungees to keep items stationary. If you’re loading a pickup, then securing your cargo properly is obviously a top priority.
Load lighter items on top, being sure to leave plenty of space for visibility and to keep items you might need where you can access them. We like to pack a small backpack with everyone’s must-have items, making it easy to grab them quickly at a rest stop.
Whether you’re staying close to home or braving new frontier, starting off right will help everyone enjoy the trip! For more information on getting the most out of your vacation, be sure to contact Pohanka Chevrolet online or to call our team at (703) 968-6677 today.
