When it comes to your vehicle, you don’t need to be an expert mechanic to take some precautions to keep it running right. Taking simple steps to prepare can help keep you on the road when things go wrong.
A common problem than many drivers face is the prospect of a dead car battery. One way to prevent this unfortunate situation from becoming your reality is to have your electrical system checked periodically at Pohanka’s car repair center in Maryland.
Occasionally, though, forgetting to shut off an interior light or accessory can wear down your battery, even when the system doesn’t have any noticeable problems. No matter the reason your battery runs out of juice, you can typically revive your car with a simple jumpstart.
The first step, of course, is to have the necessary equipment on hand. You can purchase a set of jumper cables at just about any auto parts store, and it’s always good to have them just in case. It’s also a good idea to keep a pair of safety goggles and gloves on hand; safety should always be your top priority.
When you turn the key and don’t get any sort of reaction under the hood, it’s usually a good indicator that your battery has lost its charge. Position another vehicle so that its battery is close to your own, and then shut off the other car. Grab your cables and your safety equipment, and you’re ready to get started.
The key to jump starting your vehicle is properly positioning the cables. Begin by hooking the positive clamp to the positive terminal of your own battery – note that red is universally used to mark positive clamps and terminals.
Follow by attaching the other positive clamp to the good battery, the black clamp to the negative terminal of the good battery, and the final negative clamp to a piece of grounded metal of the car with the dead battery – you can typically find an appropriate area inside the engine bay.
Once everything is connected, start the other car and rev the engine lightly for a minute or so before trying to start the car with the dead battery. Once it starts, you can disconnect the cables in the opposite order that they were connected.
After getting your car started, let it run and take it for a drive to ensure it holds a charge. It’s a good idea to visit Pohanka’s Maryland car repair center after jumping your car to have the system inspected; if an underlying problem caused your dead battery, a jump start is only a temporary fix.
