When you visit Pohanka Volkswagen, it can be easy to get caught up in the moment. After all, vehicles like the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta in our Capitol Heights showroom are captivatingly modern. The impressive 2017 Volkswagen lineup, though, is just a scratch in the surface of this international company’s long history.
Over the years, VW has made many different vehicles and become something of a cultural phenomenon in its own right. Today, we’re taking a look at some of our favorite Volkswagen trivia that you might not know!
The Volkswagen brand began when Germany aimed to provide a vehicle that every family could afford and enjoy. That’s what sparked the company’s name, which translates to, “the people’s car.” The project essentially sought to create an attainable family vehicle, eventually leading to the creation of the Volkswagen Beetle.
The resulting Beetle didn’t just stay in production for a long time—it stayed in production for the longest time. Produced from 1938 until 2003, the Beetle earned Volkswagen the distinction of having the longest running model production ever. Of course, this original Beetle isn’t to be confused with the modern Beetle that’s in the showroom of our Capitol Heights Volkswagen dealership today, which arrived quite a bit later.
The hot hatch that we know and love today, the Golf GTI, comes from a long history, as well. Before the Golf GTI made its debut, it was preceded by the Renault 5 Gordini. This special model was developed outside of normal working hours as a passion project by its team. We’re sure glad it was!
Speaking of the hot hatch, the Golf’s hatchback design wasn’t for everyone. That’s what led to the creation of the Volkswagen Jetta! Since its debut as an alternative body style of the Golf back in 1979, the Jetta has ballooned to become an overwhelmingly popular choice among American drivers!

Many motorists associate the Volkswagen logo with the brand’s reputation for reliability and precision engineering, and rightfully so. You might be surprised to learn, though, that Volkswagen is relatively young among automakers.
While our Capitol Heights Volkswagen dealership is part of a family of dealerships that’s been around for nearly a century, Volkswagen as we know it has only been around since the years following World War II.
The brand’s roots were laid when Germany began to work on developing a practical and affordable vehicle to fit the needs of its people. In 1946, Volkswagen—or “The People’s Car”—was established with the arrival of the original Beetle. The model’s success put Volkswagen on the map both in Europe and abroad, ultimately beating out the Ford Model T’s sales record in 1972.
Clean, sharp, and precise, the automaker’s logo is simple and to the point: the stacked VW gleams in the center of a perfect circle, lending itself to the brand’s focus on precision and attention to detail.
These days the logo adorns the grille of all of the brand’s latest models, including the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta at our Capitol Heights showroom. While this sedan’s idea of giving people what they need is a classic, it certainly does so in an entirely modern way.
Behind the wheel of the 2017 Jetta, you’ll find all of the latest tech waiting for you. Available features like a premium color multi-function computer, rearview camera system, and VW Car-Net® for both Guide & Inform and Security & Service, you’ll find the control you need is right at your fingertips.
