It’s no secret that Volkswagen is constantly looking ahead to find the next innovation around the bend, particularly when it comes to safety. Shoppers at our VW dealer in MD are already familiar with many of the automaker’s advanced safety features, including active systems that help drivers to stay alert and in control.
One standout feature is the available Front Assist system with Autonomous Emergency Braking, a system which automatically applies brake pressure when a potential collision is detected—even if the driver doesn’t notice the obstruction or take action immediately.
Advanced extras like these are constantly drawing MD drivers in to test drive a VW with us, but the automaker isn’t content to stop moving forward. So as we look ahead at the potential for fully autonomous vehicles, what does Volkswagen have up its sleeve?
Industry experts often take note of patents or trademarks that companies are registering, using the information to get a bit of a sneak peek at what could be around the bend. VW Vortex recently reported on a design patented by Volkswagen in Germany, which shines some light on the company’s innovative take toward autonomy on the road.
The contents of the patent include a system that will allow drivers to input guidance for the autonomous system without disengaging self-driving mode. To do so, drivers will use a touch-sensitive control panel anchored in the top of the gearshift knob.
Using tap and swipe gestures—similar to those that are common on existing touchscreen devices—drivers would be able to input instructions, as it were, to guide the vehicle. The vehicle may even request driver guidance in certain situations, such as deciding whether to pass a slow moving vehicle.
While there’s no confirmation in the patent on which Volkswagen vehicles this feature may first appear in, it certainly attests to VW’s constant passion for moving forward. If you’ve ever gone to check out a new or used car, chances are that someone has given you the age-old advice to make sure you “kick the tires.” While this advice isn’t exactly the most helpful these days, the fact that the phrase has stuck around for so long does accent the importance of the tires on any given vehicle.
When it comes to your own vehicle, the importance of quality tires can’t be overstated. Your tires are the point where your car makes contact with the ground, which makes them essential for traction and handling. It also means they take the brunt of a lot of wear and tear, so replacing them when necessary is a crucial component of maintenance.
At our VW service center in MD, we’re intimately acquainted with the tires that will fit your vehicle perfectly. When you’re looking to stick to a certain budget, we understand that purchasing used tires can be tempting. Is that really the best idea, though?
Whenever you shop for something used, the obvious benefit is price. The trick, of course, is finding a quality used item that makes the compromise worthwhile. When it comes to used tires, searching for a quality tire is essentially the same as looking for a needle in a haystack.
Smart drivers know to replace their tires in pairs, so if one of the pair is relatively new it can become a quality used tire. Finding this unicorn of the tire world, however, is another story altogether, as the vast majority of used tires were replaced because they reached the end of their usable lifespan.
Just because used tires aren’t your best option, though, doesn’t mean you can’t save! The VW tire specials at our MD service center are designed to help you save on new, quality, name brand tires that are engineered for the perfect fit on your vehicle.
Better yet, we will not be undersold on tires! Our team will meet or beat any advertised price on in-stock tires, which means you will never pay more than you need to for the exceptional tires that you deserve!
We also offer extended hours Monday through Saturday, making it easy to come in for new tires; no need for an appointment, just bring it in! To learn more about our current tire specials, or if you prefer to schedule an appointment, be sure to contact us online or to call the Pohanka Volkswagen team at (301) 808-7100 today.
